Still Alive, Still Writing
A few of you have reached out lately, worried I might have been kidnapped or worse. Rest assured: I’m still here, still writing, still stirring the pot.
The truth is, I just got back from my first trip abroad—a cruise through Alaska’s interior and back through Canada. I’ve never had much chance to travel outside of work, but this trip cracked something open in me. It left me with a hunger to see the world—especially by ship. For years, travel was out of reach. My late wife was so sick, and money was always tight. We simply couldn’t go. Now, though, I find myself free to see what other cultures look like firsthand and to write about them. And honestly, with the state America finds itself in these days, it feels like the right moment to look outward.
Before and after the trip, I’ve been buried in the final edits of my upcoming book, AI Ink: Writing, Publishing, and Misinformation at the Dawn of the AI Age. My editor at Skyhorse and I have been chiseling away at the manuscript, sculpting earlier drafts into something that finally feels like finished art. We’re now just waiting on a few blurbs from advance readers before the book is rushed into production. Luckily, Skyhorse is one of the few publishers still standing that can move a book this quickly into stores. And yes—there will be an audiobook version. This time, I even get to pick the narrator, so we can avoid some of the… let’s say “interesting” choices that were made with my first audiobook.
It’s that strange moment between exhaustion and anticipation—the kind of fatigue where you wonder if the work might actually kill you, paired with the guilt of taking a little time for yourself. But the big lift is done, and on my end things are sewn up.
Which means it’s time to get back to storytelling. They Knew will return with fresh weekly installments, and I’m also pushing to wrap up The Propagandist’s Daughters in time for a special holiday release.
So yes: I’m alive, kicking, and back at the desk. Expect a new chapter later this week as we return to our regularly scheduled programming.
And if you’d like to support my work, pre-ordering a hardcover copy of AI Ink helps more than you know. It’s going to be a beautiful book, one I’m proud to finally be putting out into the world.
Now available for pre-order, pretty much anywhere books are sold!
(PS: I’m considering using this new headshot for the inside cover. What do you think? Should this be “the one”?)
