Facing Flames Again: Our Community's Resilience and a Call to Action
Residents Urged to Contact the Sheriff About Possible Lost Homes
Author’s Note: Please share this post widely to help inform the community about the structures lost in the Alexander Mountain Fire. Sharing this information will assist homeowners in understanding the status of their properties and ensure that those affected can connect with the resources they need.
As the Alexander Mountain Fire continues its relentless march across Larimer County, our community is gripped by a haunting sense of déjà vu. For many of us, the memories of the historic wildfires in the fall of 2020—when the Cameron Peak, East Troublesome, and Lefthand Canyon Fires engulfed vast swaths of our beloved landscapes and threatened our homes—are still fresh. Now, once again, we find ourselves united in facing another fiery adversary.
The Alexander Mountain Fire, which ignited on July 29, has already burned over 9,530 acres and is only 5% contained. Despite the tireless efforts of nearly 400 personnel, elevated fire behavior is expected to persist, exacerbated by dry conditions and anticipated winds. The firefighting teams are working diligently to protect values at risk along Highway 34 and around Cedar Park, employing water equipment and monitoring hotspots.
The Damage Assessment Team has confirmed that the fire has damaged or destroyed several structures in the area, particularly around Palisade Mountain Drive and Snow Top Drive. Specifically, the fire has damaged 4 homes, destroyed 25 homes, and destroyed 20 outbuildings. Sheriff John Feyen, in coordination with the Larimer County Office of Emergency Management, is actively reaching out to property owners who have been affected. However, not all owners have been contacted yet.
If you or someone you know owns property on the following roads and has not been contacted, please reach out to the Damage Assessment Center at (970) 980-2800:
Cedar Creek Road
Spruce Mountain Drive
Green Ridge Road
Possum Court
Palisade Mountain Drive
Snow Top Drive
Bobcat Drive
It is important to note that not all properties on these roads were affected. If you provide your contact details and do not receive a callback within the next day, your property did not have damage at the time of assessment.
In the face of this ongoing threat, Sheriff Feyen urges residents, especially those in the Storm Mountain area, to register their contact information. Many homeowners and renters in the affected areas have not yet provided their details, making it difficult for emergency services to reach them.
This fire, like the ones before it, brings more than just physical destruction. It reignites the emotional wounds of past traumas, challenging our collective spirit and resilience. During the 2020 fires, we evacuated under the shadow of three simultaneous blazes, reminiscent of our current situation. Personally, after covering those fires from the front lines, I ended up in the Poudre Valley Hospital ER due to lung issues—a lasting reminder of my time working in wildland fire and the hazards we all faced.
To stay updated on evacuation notices, road closures, and air quality advisories, visit nocoalert.org or text LCEVAC to 888777. For those impacted by the fire, the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office Joint Information Center is a vital resource for information and assistance.
While the cause of the Alexander Mountain Fire remains under investigation, the community is encouraged to share any information or media related to the fire’s origin with the Forest Service Law Enforcement Tip Line at 303-275-5266.
In these challenging times, let us remember the resilience that defines us. Together, we can navigate this crisis and emerge stronger, ready to rebuild and heal once more.
For those affected, please reach out, stay safe, and know that your community stands with you.
