William Sturgiss, the new operations manager of the Estes Park American Legion Post 119, has only been on the job for just three weeks now. But, that did not stop him from jumping into action when he discovered that there were no planned 9/11 memorial events planned on this year’s 20th anniversary.
Traditionally 9/11 events are held at 8:40 am on 9/11, when the first plane struck the World Trade Center Towers. However, most of the local first responders were already scheduled to be a part of the Scottish Highlands Festival, which is also happening this weekend.
So the event at the American Legion is scheduled for noon.
Sturgiss asked the Estes Park Police Department Chief, Wes Kufeld, and Paul Capo, Davison Chief at the Estes Park Fire Protection District, to speak at the event. The event will also be MC’d by Dick Life.
There will be a band on hand playing patriotic music, and the Legion will be dedicating a new flag.
There will also be a BBQ lunch provided for free. However, donations are encouraged. All proceeds will be used equally between veteran assistance and first responder support.
This will be a short event that is expected to be wrapped up around 12:30 pm.
